Design Museum Presents: Parked Art: Designing Art for Common Space
EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT

Design Museum
London

18 July 2008

Taking the Portavillion project as a starting point this one day symposium addresses the relationship between public art and public space from the practical and curatorial delivery of specific projects to the social and environmental value that public art can create.

At a time when talking about the differences and crossovers between art and design is being stepped up, this event aims to expand the discussion to a broader level to allow the inclusion of a suitably diverse and relevant body of interested parties.

The morning speakers will include Emma Underhill (Director of UP Projects and Portavilion curator) with Amanda Smelthurst, (Arts Service Manager, Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea) to introduce the vision and practical realities of the Portavilian project; Louise Trodden (Director of Art in the Open; artist and architect collective Public Works); and writer and curator Jes Fernie on the collaboration between artists and architects.

The afternoon session will be led by The Art of Common Space, a Gunpowder Park project. Tony Beckwith, Creative Development Director for Gunpowder Park will discuss the use of our open spaces with speakers Tracey McNulty, Group Manager Arts Programme and Cultural Development Leisure for the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, responsible for some of the most ambitious open space redevelopments in London.

Parked Art is produced by UP Projects in partnership with the Design Museum and The Art of Common Space, a Gunpowder Park project. It is hosted by the London Parks and Green Spaces Forum at the Design Museum.
