After a 27-year career working as Walt Disney’s principle animator and main “storyman,” Bill Peet devoted himself full-time to writing and illustrating children’s books. Along with sketches and storyboards from his Disney days, this exhibition features original works of art from 14 of Peet’s 34 published books, including Buford the Little Bighorn, The Caboose Who Got Loose, Cappyboppy, Chester the Worldly Pig, Cowardly Clyde, Ella, How Droofus the Dragon Lost His Head, Kermit the Hermit, Pamela Camel, The Wump World, and the Caldecott Honor Book Bill Peet: An Autobiography.
As a child growing up in Indiana, Bill Peet’s secret ambition was to be an illustrator of animal stories. He would draw for hours at a time, but he didn’t really believe that drawing could become a career. Then, in 1933 he was awarded a scholarship to attend the Herron School of Art in Indianapolis, and he was on his way.
After graduation, Peet headed to California to work for the legendary Walt Disney Studios and became the studio’s principle animator and main “storyman.” During his Disney career, Peet created characters such as Dumbo and animated countless Disney classics including 101 Dalmations, The Sword in the Stone, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty. In his autobiography, Peet gives an insider view of what it was like to work for Disney, and the exhibition includes sample storyboards and animated sketches from that period of his life. With both his beloved animated characters and award-winning children’s picture books, Peet certainly achieved, and even surpassed, his childhood ambition to be an illustrator of animal stories.
