Friendster, Inc., the 7th largest website in the world based on traffic and the #1 social network in Asia, today announced that it is the #1 social network in Malaysia, and four times the size of any other social network in the country. Friendster is 4 times bigger than Facebook and more than 4 times bigger than MySpace in Malaysia – according to the third party, well-known Internet measurement company, comScore. Friendster had 3,024,000 unique visitors in May 2008, compared to Facebook at 758,000, and MySpace at 735,000.
Friendster also has more unique visitors than any other major social network in Malaysia in each and every age range from age 15 to 54. Specifically:
With over 2,400,000 unique visitors in the 15 – 34 age range, Friendster is over 4 times larger than Facebook and over 4 times larger than MySpace in this category, which is great news for brands, advertisers, and marketers looking to reach this attractive and large demographic segment.
“Friendster is appealing to Malaysians since approximately over a quarter of all Internet users in Malaysia visit Friendster each month, and comScore data demonstrates these are young adults from 16 years old through college, as well as professionals in their twenties, thirties and forties,” said Jeff Roberto, director of marketing and PR at Friendster.
“Given comScore data does not include users and traffic coming from mobile devices and internet cafes, and both are common ways Internet users in Malaysia and throughout Asia access Friendster, we’re actually seeing larger numbers internally for Friendster in Malaysia than these,” Roberto said.
May 2008 metrics from comScore also reveal Friendster has relatively low overlap with other social networks in Malaysia. Users of Friendster generally did not visit other social networks, for example, only 17% of Friendster users visited Facebook and only 19% visited MySpace in May.
This is not the case for other social networks, where 70% of Facebook users and 80% of MySpace users visited Friendster in May.
“Since Friendster is four times larger than Facebook and MySpace, about three-quarters of Facebook users are already on Friendster, and more than three-quarters of MySpace users are already on Friendster, most experts in the advertising industry hearing these numbers would describe Friendster as an ‘effective buy’ for brands, advertisers and marketers,” said Roberto.
“Friendster also leads other social networks in Malaysia by being the first to offer a complete social networking experience in Malay, and a new mobile site, also in Malay.”
Friendster Leads in Asia – Friendster is the #1 social network in Asia, with over 55 million registered users and 36 million monthly unique visitors from Asia. In Asia, Friendster is more than twice the size of any other social network. While Friendster has 36 million monthly unique visitors in Asia, the next largest social network has only 18 million.

Friendster is 1st in “user engagement” among the top five global social networks with an average of 229 minutes per visitor per month.
