60 Degrees: Art beyond Borders brings together Chicago’s leading cultural institutions—the Art Institute of Chicago, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Poetry Foundation, and the Chicago Council on Global Affairs—for a yearlong celebration of cultural, social, and political life around the world.
In tandem with exhibitions pulled from the Art Institute’s encyclopedic collection, leading museum directors, renowned musicians, international poets, and cultural leaders explore the role of art and culture around our ever-shrinking globe. This season will offer visitors the singular opportunity to see, hear, and consider the riches the world has to offer, all under one roof.
Join us for a wealth of insightful and exciting 360 Degrees programming.
Lectures: Four engaging lecture series occur throughout the season. In "The Fate of Encyclopedic Museums," directors from the Art Institute, the Getty, the British Museum, and the Met discuss the role of the encyclopedic museum. Noted scholars also explore current and historical perspectives on globalization and Art Institute curators give their take on the encyclopedic nature of their collections.
In addition to these series, 360 Degrees lectures probe topics as varied as Chicago as a global city, the universal significance of Abraham Lincoln, and the world-renowned artist Edvard Munch.
Music: Showcasing local and international talents including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Ars Antigua, the Newberry Consort, and the Kronos Quartet, a variety of concerts and four concert series highlight the interconnection of the visual and musical arts.
Poetry: Presented with the Poetry Foundation, two captivating poetry series feature the work of such noted contemporary poets as Adam Zagajewski, Robert Pinsky, and Philip Levine and the work of such acclaimed poets as Czeslaw Milosz and Octavio Paz.
Symposia: Prints and drawings and tapestry experts congregate at the Art Institute for two symposia. One day of lectures and discussions explores the exhibition Drawn to Italian Drawings: The Goldman Collection and another highlights The Divine Art: Four Centuries of European Tapestries.
Conversations: Discussions with noted musicians, singers, and actors, including Brazil's Compania Triptal and Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theater, are coupled with performance in these thought-provoking events.
