School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents “Personal Algorithms,” a sculpture, video and painting exhibition by SVA students who take an intuitive, process-oriented approach to making art. The artists are Gregg Louis, Stacy Scibelli and Paul Vogeler. The exhibition is curated by Richard Brooks, assistant director of student galleries.
In his video installation Everything I Saw & Everything I Missed, Gregg Louis poses conceptual quandaries about making art and the viewer’s role in completing the artwork. Louis presents a double self-portrait, one with eyes shut and the other with his eyes blinking. In this simple meditation on presence and absence, the artist invites the viewer to contemplate the ineffable space between thought and creation. Louis is a student in the MFA Fine Arts Department.
Stacy Scibelli synthesizes color and form in her bold yet delicate abstract sculptures. Relying on instinct rather than pre-meditated concepts, she takes a spontaneous approach, allowing each decision to determine her next move. Using non-traditional materials such as foam padding, wigs and fabric, Scibelli combines improvisation, revision and wit to create artworks which balance rigorous formalism with rich, tactile sensuality. Scibelli is a student in the MFA Fine Arts Department.
Using a geometric vocabulary layered with organic elements, Paul Vogeler’s paintings explode with vibrant color and energy. As the artist states: “Our contemporary urban environment is an ever-changing collage of architecture, ornament, color and motion. My goal is to reflect this environment while simultaneously presenting a static object amidst apparent chaos.” Vogeler is a student in the BFA Fine Arts Department.
