Delaware Art Museum
Delaware
22 August 2009 – 4 October 2009
This exhibition of Minimal and Conceptual art is comprised of 50 works of art that the Delaware Art Museum received as a gift from the renowned collection of Dorothy and Herbert Vogel. The Museum was given these works as part of a joint initiative called Fifty Works for Fifty States that was launched by the Vogels and the National Gallery of Art, with support the National Endowment for the Arts and the Institute of Museum and Library Services. This program is distributing 2,500 works from the Vogels’ collection of contemporary art throughout the nation, with 50 works going to a selected institution in each of the 50 states.
In 1992, the National Gallery of Art announced the acquisition of a portion of the Vogel Collection through partial purchase and gift from the Vogels. Since forming its association with the National Gallery, the Vogel Collection has grown to include some 4,000 works, far more than can be appropriately placed in a single institution.
Herbert Vogel, now in his 80’s, spent most of his working life as an employee of the United States Postal Service. Dorothy Vogel, who is in her 70’s, was a reference librarian at the Brooklyn Public Library. By setting their collecting priorities above those of personal comfort, the couple used Dorothy’s salary to cover the expenses of daily life and devoted Herbert’s salary to the acquisition of contemporary art. As the first collectors to buy works by many artists who were then unknown to a wide audience, the Vogels offered encouragement at the start of the careers of several figures who went on to achieve considerable acclaim.
The Delaware Art Museum’s exhibition includes works by 23 artists, including Will Barnet, Robert Mangold, Edda Renouf, and Lynda Benglis.
