MODE, a motion design production company headquartered in Chicago, shared in the success of the 2008 Chicago Creative Club Awards by creating a custom motion design package for the event. More than 400 people attended the show, which was held at the United Room at Soldier Field.
Keeping with the theme of this year’s event, “You Are the Show”, MODE created dynamic animations in which each show entrant became a unique piece of the overall design.
The engine driving the work was an open-source program called Processing, a softwarE platform used to create the opening title, category and presenter animations.
“MODE captured what we wanted the event to be about, which is the Chicago advertising community. The work was elegant and seamless in its concept and performance,” says Two by Four President and Creative Director David Stevenson, one of the driving forces behind the awards.
Most event design packages are rendered out and played from tape. MODE, equipped with a laptop, two desktop computers and a wireless router, ran the animations in real-time.
Stevenson added, “MODE’s design team did a great job of executing the work live. Everything appeared as scripted but the beauty of the processing approach is that it allowed room for spontaneous, unplanned moments that occur during a live show.”
