Lucie Foundation Presents A Talk With Legendary Photographer Herman Leonard
EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT

Splashlight Studios, Soho, One Hudson Square, 75 Varick Street, New York
United States of America

18 October 2008

The Lucie Foundation, with generous support from Canon and Splashlight Studios, proudly presents an artist talk with legendary photographer Herman Leonard.

A presentation of his work will be followed by a Q and A with the photographer. Mr. Leonard is the 2008 Lucie Award honoree for Achievement in Portraiture. He will be honored at the Lucie Awards gala ceremony at Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center.

Mr. Leonard will have pre-signed books available for purchase following the lecture.  The titles are Jazz, Giants & Journeys: The Photography of Herman Leonard,  (published in 2006) and Jazz Memories (out of print.)

Born in Pennsylvania, Herman earned his BFA at Ohio University before apprenticing with portraitist Yousuf Karsh.

He opened his first studio in Greenwich Village where he freelanced by day and photographed the luminaries of the Jazz world by night. His subjects included the likes of Dexter Gordon, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis and countless others.

He worked with Marlon Brando in the Far East, move to Paris where he worked in fashion and advertising, while he fed his passion for photographing the Jazz scene.

Later, he lived on the island of Ibiza with his family before relocating to New Orleans, following the Jazz musicians there, until  hurricane Katrina devastated his home, studio and archives.

Leonard's photographs, a record of the jazz scene of the 1940s through the 1960s, are now in the permanent archives of American Musical History in the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C.
