Professor Roland Young to Teach at Academy of Art University
PRESS RELEASE

November 2008

The Academy of Art University, San Francisco has announced the newest addition to its design school faculty.

Renowned design instructor Roland Young will begin teaching classes for the School of Graphic Design next semester (January 2009).

Young has been teaching since the late 1960s and still, some 40 years later, continues to inspire students and professionals alike.

Mary Scott, Chair, School of Graphic Design, is a longtime friend and admirer of Young.

Scott was instrumental in bringing Young to the Academy. “He’s 71 years old and he’s still one of the most talked about design professors. Any school would be lucky to have him and we are thrilled that he chose to join us. Our students are buzzing about it too. They are excited for the opportunity to learn from this man who is known as inspirational and brilliant – there may also be a little nervous excitement about experiencing first-hand the intimidating and terrifying reputation that comes with his brilliance,” says Scott.

Young continues to impress, whether it be through inspiration or infuriation, with his passion for design and his belief in bringing out the best design a student can produce. He is confident in his teachings and has developed a long list of admirers.

Young taught from the late 1960s through the early 1980s taking a hiatus before returning to teaching in the late 1980s. Then again in 2007 Young decided to take a leave of absence but word quickly spread of his availability.

He was instantly recruited by Academy of Art University graduate and now professor, Sophia Shih to teach at Taiwan Normal University. Young will continue his work with the University where he is known as “Master” rather than “Professor.”

He began his design career at Capitol/Angel Records in 1964 under the guidance of Louis Danziger who Young refers to as his mentor. He later moved to A&M Records as creative director where he produced some of the music industry’s finest album covers and advertising campaigns.

Prior to joining the Academy of Art University faculty, Young was co-principal of the Tracey Shiffman/Roland Young Design Group. The firm has an extensive client list including Capitol Records, A&M Records and The Getty Center for Education in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Young also consults for Meryl Pollen Design, and teaches his ex-student Imin Pao’s design staff at PAPER Magazine.

The School of Graphic Design recognizes design as a cultural force that spans consumer, commerce and social causes.

Under the aegis of Mary Scott, Chair, and Phil Hamlett, Graduate Director, the School of Graphic Design is noted for its real-world approach to teaching the art of graphic design, and ardently preparing its students for presenting themselves into the profession of graphic design.

Graduates from the School of Graphic Design work in many of the industry’s most prestigious firms.
