November 2008
Artist Thanos Zakopulos' participates in the exhibition ’Flight Number Ten’ of the 2008 Saint Etienne International Design Biennial with an art installation that talks about design: Totem.
Totem is a composition of old-used furniture that have been transformed utilizing unrelated materials while following a common concept; each piece has been re-thought not so much based on its' functionality but more on its' history and inbuilt philosophy.
The memory of each object has been the basis of inspiration while the use of contemporary materials underlines certain formal characteristics converting them to symbolic elements.
At the same time the installation represents a symbol for the tourism of the area, and the city of Saint Etienne in particular, which has invested the last years a lot on design.
It is also an attempt to create awareness towards an ever consuming society placing emphasis on issues of sustainability and real design values.
The project was supported by the Ecole Superieure d’Art et Design de Sainte Etienne.
