Unisys & Smead Manufacturing Honored As Winners Of 2008 InfoWorld 100 Awards
PRESS RELEASE

November 2008

Unisys Corporation announced that Unisys has been named a winner alongside its client, Smead Manufacturing, of the esteemed 2008 InfoWorld 100 Awards.

The awards honor information technology (IT) organizations that have implemented and integrated technologies in innovative ways in pursuit of concrete business goals.

For the third year running, a Unisys client has been honored as a winner of this prestigious award."When our customers succeed, Unisys succeeds," said Mark Feverston, general manager, Microsoft Solutions, Unisys.

"It's so gratifying to help a customer like Smead achieve cost savings and operational efficiencies and apply those same types of problem-solving techniques and expertise internally for the same end goal."

Smead Manufacturing, of Hastings, Minnesota, is a leading provider of document management solutions for home, school, and business use. It was honored for a project on which it teamed with Unisys to reduce the "server sprawl" challenge facing its network.

The IT team devised a strategy that centered on server consolidation, successfully deploying a Unisys ES7000 Enterprise Server and Microsoft Windows Datacenter platform to streamline operations, cut costs, and scale to handle increased database use.

By moving toward a modernized, virtualized IT infrastructure - having already consolidated approximately 120 physical servers down to fewer than 10 through virtualization - Smead can manage and run various applications simultaneously in a more efficient way, without negatively impacting server capacity.

"The results we have achieved in operational efficiency, increased productivity and faster service to customers through virtualization have surpassed our initial expectations," said Joe Vossen, vice president of Information Services at Smead.

"By better controlling server resources and reducing associated IT maintenance and support costs, Smead anticipates a $3.2 million return on investment over the next three years."
