Red Dot Presents Red Dot Design Awards 2008
PRESS RELEASE

December 2008

An experimental musical performance set an exciting rhythm to the annual red dot award: design concept awarding ceremony.

The ceremony is the culmination of a yearlong competition to bring to light the best design concepts from all over the world.

Conceptual musician Timothy O’Dwyer created 2 performances especially for the ceremony. Saxophone, electronics, video and dancer combined to create abstract shapes and textures that shimmered, vibrated and stretched sound and visual experience to the very limits of perception.

The performances perfectly encapsulated the philosophy of the red dot design award for design concepts, which is to create for the future.

This year’s red dot award: design concept received 1,906 entries from 49 countries, an increase of 115% compared to last year, reinforcing the significance of this category of the red dot design award.

Of the 1,906 entries, 170 received the red dot award for outstanding design quality. Another 21 received the distinction red dot: best of the best for highest design quality.

These winners are automatically nominated for the competition’s premium award - the red dot: luminary.

This year, the 360 from Francesco Sommacal won the unanimous approval of the jury. The 360 is a re-definition of the extreme sport of skateboarding.

Of the winning design concepts, Dr. Carlos Hinrichsen, current president of the ICSID and member of the jury, 2008 said, “The winning proposals are forward-looking but with a high probability of becoming real products."

"These concepts allow for dreaming and seeing new and attractive solutions that are relevant in day-to-day life.”

The red dot museum in Singapore was at full capacity with over 400 guests, this included the designers of 62 winning concepts who travelled from as far as Iran and Russia to Singapore to accept their awards.

Guests from industry and design added to celebrations.

For the ceremony, Pico Art International, the official event manager, transformed the red dot design museum’s main gallery into a runway stage for presenting the winners to the audience.

Adding to the celebrations were cocktails mixed at the Bombay Sapphire bar located right inside the museum, as well as, at the Sapphire Lounge just outside the museum. Bombay Sapphire was the official spirit and cocktail for the awards.

At the conclusion of the awards ceremony, Ken Koo, red dot design award President, Asia, unveiled this year’s yearbook of winners and invited guests to view the special exhibition of winning concepts.

The yearbook and exhibition is a tradition of the red dot design awards, providing designers with a reference to the best in design. The yearlong exhibition is on view at the red dot design museum.
