Carlton Architecture Wins National Award from Builder Magazine
PRESS RELEASE

December 2008

Carlton Architecture of Asheville was recently honored with a Builder's Choice Award from Builder magazine for its design of the Chauncey Knoll home in The Ramble, Biltmore Forest.

The Merit Award in the custom, one-of-a-kind, 3,500 to 6,000 square feet category was one of only 23 such awards bestowed nationwide by the competition's judges, and the only one in North Carolina.

Carlton Architecture Principal Rob Carlton received the award at the 28th Annual Builder's Choice Awards Gala in Washington, DC, where Chauncey Knoll was cited for its contextual design.

"Sited among old-growth trees, its natural palette is a symphony of indigenous textures including cypress, yellow pine, poplar, white oak, Virginia fieldstone and Tennessee crab orchard sandstone," the award read.

Craftsmanship was locally sourced, as artisans from Asheville created custom cabinetry as well as concrete surrounds for the home's centerpiece--a massive double-sided hearth anchoring its main living spaces.

"We do our best to use materials that are harvested regionally instead of bringing things from far away, exotic places," Carlton said.
