Odebrecht Construction, the Coral Gables-based construction and engineering firm, was selected "Contractor of the Year" by the Miami Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA Miami) during the organization's 54th Annual Design Awards.
Odebrecht Construction has distinguished itself by building some of Miami's most iconic structures, including the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, American Airlines Arena, Golden Glades Interchange, and the recently-completed FIU Stadium, among many others.
Through a joint venture with Parsons Aviation, the company is leading the expansion of Miami International Airport, ranked as the largest airport expansion project currently underway in the United States.
Founded in 1857, the American Institute of Architects is the leading professional membership association for architects with over 83,000 members.
AIA Miami has over 600 members from Florida's architecture and design professional community.
The Annual Design Awards recognize contributions to architecture and design across 19 Honor categories.
AIA Miami chapter members nominate individuals and firms to be considered for the annual professional, trade and community awards, with a committee comprised of its board of directors selecting the honorees.
"Every year the American Institute of Architects Miami Chapter recognizes individuals who have made a notable contribution to design, construction and community services related to architecture, the building arts and urban design," said Natividad Soto, 2009 AIA Miami president and coordinator of this year's awards program.
"We at AIA consider these awards very special tributes to those who have supported us in our work and displayed exceptional professionalism."
"We are honored to have been awarded Contractor of the Year by AIA Miami in recognition of our quality, safety and professional standards," said Gilberto Neves, CEO of Odebrecht Construction in the United States.
"One of our company's core beliefs is that we do not only build structures, but we also contribute to building communities. We are very proud of the projects that we have built in Miami and how they have positively impacted our community."
Other major Odebrecht Construction projects include reconstruction projects in New Orleans for the US Army Corps of Engineers, which named it "Builder of the Year" in 1999 for its work on California's Seven Oaks Dam, the largest floodwater prevention project ever built in the United States.
Odebrecht Construction, part of Brazil's Odebrecht Group, was the first Brazilian contractor ever to win a public works contract in the United States when it entered the market in 1991.
