The band’s seventh studio album, Poetry of the Day After contains twelve refreshing tracks that capture the essence of daily lives and struggles of growing up, signature of the five-man band that has been hailed as Taiwan’s Heavenly Band.
Formed as early as in 1995, the quintet is known for hit songs such as Peter and Mary and Tenderness and Stubbornness, and has consistently won accolades, for example at the Golden Melody Awards and Global Chinese Music Awards.
Recording work for Poetry of the Day After took place in the two Asian cities of Taipei and Tokyo under the meticulous supervision of recording engineers Jay Huang and Hiroshi Kitashiro.
Huang, who was overall responsible for the audio recording and mixing in Taiwan, was frank about his demands for quality audio equipment for Poetry of the Day After.
“Mayday has released over 100 songs, so work on the latest album required innovation on the audio front.”
“For a five-piece rock ensemble to exhibit music flare and creativity, and to capture the mood and essence of the album, it was essential to have the right microphones,” he explained.
To achieve his desired effect, Huang specially requested the evolution e 900 series, classic rugged microphones MD 421 and MD 441, as well as Neumann recording microphones including the KM 185 and U 87.
An e 901 and e 902 were used on the kick, and e 914 for cymbals and hi-hat, while the MD 421 dynamic cardioid microphone was a favourite for bass, guitar amps and toms.
“The e 900 series microphones are a good match for Mayday’s rock style,” noted Huang, adding that the Neumann U 87 condenser microphones lent a “crisp yet natural” edge to the vocals.
Vince Tan, Sennheiser’s relations manager for the Asia-Pacific region, said the company was not only proud to support the vastly popular Mayday in its latest album, but also gratified with the endorsement by dedicated professionals like Huang.
“With his level of experience, Jay has chosen the equipment with much care to help him capture the audio he wants for post-recording mixing."
"We are pleased that he has succeeded in delivering an outstanding album,” he added.
