As China stands resolved to date as the world’s largest apparel manufacture base, its reputation for inferior production continue to plague it. But that may change soon as one designer sets his sights on establishing his name and in turn, China’s.
Famed Hong Kong designer, Dorian Ho, has recently earned success with his haute couture evening and bridal wear. Riding on the growing popularity for them in Asia for Western-style weddings, Ho creates his pieces with the best of both worlds: finest material from the West and cheapest production from the East.
Since his first step, Ho’s labels have graced international fashion runways, giving a voice not just to his cuts but “Made in China” clothes and this, with time, could dilute the stigma of inferior production associated with China produce.
Conventional Western designer labels have always stayed close to home for optimum quality control. For that, whatever is “Made in Europe” is today, regarded of rigorous quality and detail. But labels are having a change of heart now as costs in the West continue to rocket. One fashion house, Burberry, has already started producing polo shirts in China last year. That is not the only reason for established labels to turn to the East though. Surprisingly, it is the Chinese market that has become attractive.
Ho presently has showrooms in New York, Hong Kong and Sydney and sells to high-end department stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue in America as well as luxury boutiques around the world. To expand on this success, he plans to launch his "Made in China" designer clothing in Europe soon.
