The Camden Arts Centre displays the work of highly influential 1990s artist Liz Arnold, alongside an installation by Romanian artist Mircea Cantor, in two exhibitions opening later this month.
Liz Arnold, a painter who died at the age of 36 in 2001, described her paintings as “little worlds”, created to both escape from, and refer to, the real world.
This show, which is the artist's first solo show in a public gallery, includes paintings and watercolours, some of which have never been exhibited before. Her carefully crafted canvases depict cartoon-like animals seemingly imbued with human emotions. They inhabit a world that is both fantastical and familiar.
Mircea Cantor's installation, The Need for Uncertainty (2008), comprises two peacocks that inhabit a series of large golden cages.
Cantor also displays other works exploring the nature of uncertainty.
