Google has launched Google Latitude, a feature in Google Maps for mobile and iGoogle that allows users to share their physical location with friends and family.
Google Latitude does not pinpoint users’ exact locations but it does give a good idea at a given time.
Users using their Google account, can opt into the feature, and then invite friends and family to join Google Latitude. Once they accept, users will see their profile picture appear on a map through their mobile device or computer.
If users spot friends or relatives nearby on Google Latitude, they can call, text, IM or email them to meet up. Google Latitude also provides the directions to their locations on the map for ease of navigation.
While this is a fun feature, Google Latitude can also be turned off or placed under selected sharing mode if users wish to control their visibility to others.
Google Latitude is available in 27 countries, and across a variety of devices, including:
Android-powered devices, such as the T-Mobile G1; most color BlackBerry devices
most Windows Mobile 5.0+ devices; most Symbian S60 devices (Nokia smartphones); and
Google.com users of iGoogle.
