Director Anthony Fabian will join audiences at the upcoming red carpet Centerpiece Gala screening of his film, ‘Skin,’ as part of the Pan African Film And Arts Festival (PAFF).
‘Skin’ won the Audience Award at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF) earlier in January.
The film is based on the extraordinary true story of Sandra Laing, a black child born in 1950s South Africa to white Afrikaner parents, unaware of their black ancestry.
The story follows Sandra's thirty-year journey from rejection to acceptance, betrayal to reconciliation, as she struggles to define her place in a changing world–and triumphs against all odds.
‘Skin’ had its World Premiere at the 2008 Toronto Film Festival in September, and its US Premiere at the 2008 AFI Fest in Los Angeles in November. It has garnered rave reviews worldwide and played to sell-out crowds at the SBIFF last week.
Sandra Laing herself, the subject of the film, will be traveling from South Africa for the screening in Los Angeles.
"It always galvanizes the audience when Sandra makes an appearance at the Q&A after a screening," commented director Anthony Fabian.
"Suddenly it hits home: this happened to a real person."
The screening is a red carpet event whose invited guest list includes Don Cheadle, Maya Angelou, Steven Spielberg, Angelina Jolie, Michelle Obama, and Kate Winslet, among many others.
