International Design Competition Launched To Design New Piece Of Public Art
PRESS RELEASE

February 2009

The Planning & Design Centre, in partnership with W. M. Fares Group, want to redefine and enhance public space in the region.

An international two-stage competition has been launched to create a permanent piece of public art to be located in front of the new live/work development called The Trillium, currently under construction in downtown Halifax.

The Planning & Design Centre is a collaborative, non-profit organisation dedicated to improving the quality of life in the Halifax region by making planning and design a more visible, inclusive, and vital aspect of our everyday experience.

The Centre increases awareness about current projects and reports, provides forums for the exchange of ideas, both locally and globally, and advances innovative propositions.

To fully establish itself as a new institution by Spring 2009, the Centre is securing a street-front space in downtown Halifax as well as long-term private and public funding.

The competition is open to everyone, and both individual and group submissions will be accepted. Collaboration between disciplines is strongly encouraged.

Three semi-finalists will be selected in Stage One and receive $1,000 each to further develop their ideas.

The winner will receive $5,000 as well as the commission for the installation of the piece.

A diverse jury of local artists, architects, planners, and community members will appraise submissions according to the degree to which competitors address design considerations, such as public engagement, urban context, movement, and local materials.

"I am happy to be working with some of these creative professionals, members of the Planning and Design Centre, in developing the Halifax Regional Municipality's first mandated public art in private development since the adoption of the Public Art Policy," said Jamie MacLellan, HRM's Public Art Facilitator.

"It is my hope that the Trillium Project will be the first of many opportunities of its kind, and that it marks the beginning of a period of genuine collaboration and creative exchange in envisioning our municipality's future."
