Warmoesstraat 139, Amsterdam
The Netherlands
14 March – 12 April 2009
New Jersey-born visual artist, Erin Marie Dunn, will present her solo show ‘Distinguished by the Swans’ at the popular Dutch art spot W139.
Dunn first participated in a group show at W139 called ‘Love in the City’ in the summer of 2007. She was invited back by artist and director of W139, Gijs Frieling, for a solo exhibition of her stop-action animations featuring her drawings and puppets.
“My imagery is playful,” says Dunn, “Seagulls fly through a garden of double helixes, a giant praying mantis leaps onto swan-filled bubbles. There is no linear narrative to this work. I shoot stop-action animation techniques with digital media, I experiment with narration. I intend my drawings and animations to be viewed as material manifestations of a virtual landscape. The viewer navigates the work like an Internet explorer, one seductive detail point to another.”
W139 is managed, run and staffed by artists and has become an important artist meeting place in Amsterdam. Its openings are immensely popular with admission lines spilling down the Warmoesstraat, a street in the oldest part of the city. W139 is a huge, not-for-profit art space and curates shows of mainly site-specific installations by young Dutch and international artists.
