Design Museum Launches Education Site
PRESS RELEASE

March 2009

The Design Museum is launching a new microsite, created by Make It Clear, which aims to engage teachers and students with the world of design.

The Discover Design site, which will officially launch at Kingsdale School, London SE21 next Tuesday, will feature statement designs from the museum’s collection, and will also aim to engage students with a series of questions: What do you see? What is it made of? What does it do? and What is the impact?

Jay Nicholl, director of Make It Clear, says the consultancy started work on the site last summer following a pitch, and was briefed to ‘find a way to communicate around the design process’.

Nicholl says, "Rather than just putting objects up on a pedestal we wanted to examine them and ask how the designers reached that end."

Helen Charman, head of education at the Design Museum, says, "More than ever today’s world needs discerning consumers and responsible designers."

"Discover Design will enrich young people’s experiences of design through enabling them to better understand its impact on everyday life - as well as perhaps sowing the seeds of a lifelong passion for contemporary design and the Design Museum."

The site, which will also feature downloadable resources to support National Curriculum design study, is supported by Brit Insurance.
