In conjunction with the opening of Miami Art Museum’s exhibition of Recent Acquisitions, leading Minimalist artist Richard Tuttle will speak at the Museum on March 15.
Tuttle is widely recognized for his small three-dimensional works that the artist characterizes as drawings which seek to "to account for the invisible." The Tuttle pieces in Recent Acquisitions, publicly on view in Miami for the first time, are from the recent gift of 50 works from the Dorothy and Herbert Vogel Collection to Miami Art Museum.
Mrs. Vogel, who along with her husband has collected work by Tuttle for more than three decades, notes that Tuttle’s work “taught me how to look at art and things around me."
The Tuttle works on view are drawn from among eight portfolios of the artist’s Loose Leaf Notebook Drawings executed from 1980-82. These ethereal and poetic watercolors on lined notebook paper embody the experimental lyricism that characterizes the work of an artist whose significant influence has been felt from the 1960s to the present day.
Tuttle may be best known to Miami audiences for Splash, his first large-scale public work, created for MAM Trustee Craig Robbins’ development Aqua on Miami Beach. He was a featured artist in the third season of PBS’ acclaimed series on contemporary art, Art 21 and is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship and the Skowhegan Medal for Sculpture.
Tuttle has had one-person exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, California; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; ICA Philadelphia; Kunsthaus Zug, Switzerland; Centro Galego de Arte Contemporánea, Santiago de Compostela; and the Museu Serralvesin, Porto, Portugal.
