The Design Studies Forum and the Master's Program in the History of Decorative Arts and Design at Parsons The New School for Design announced "Design on Film."
This daylong symposium marks the launch of Design and Culture, a new interdisciplinary peer-reviewed journal published by Berg that will serve as the official journal of the Design Studies Forum.
Design and Culture explores the dynamic, contingent relationships between design and its many cultural contexts.
Encompassing the numerous professional, quasi-professional, and amateur fields of design, the journal identifies and explores cultures of design and designs of culture, investigating the tensions often encountered between critical, analytical, and intellectual activity and traditional studio-based endeavors.
The journal's second issue identifies twenty-four films that reflect design's complex relation with film.
Asked to suggest a film that "every design professional should know," twenty-two scholars, practitioners and curators respond.
"Design on Film" proceeds from the assumption that the interplay between design, its history, and film is multifarious.
Design in film can shape cinematic narrative or be subject matter, while films themselves can also be seen "designed" artifacts, encompassing broad theoretical assertions through visual representation.
