The Association For Retail Environments awarded David Gould a 2009 A.R.E. Design Award for an innovative display he created for the new Lion Brand Yarn Studio in Manhattan. The A.R.E. Design Award embodies the best in overall retail design, store fixtures and visual presentation. The prestigious award recognizes innovative design in retail environments. The Lion Brands Yarn Studio opened its doors to the public on November 18th, 2008 and has quickly become one of the most popular gathering places in Manhattan for knitting and crochet enthusiasts.
The Studio offers shoppers an exciting retail environment that encourages customers to try out selected yarns, enjoy free demonstrations and participate in classes and special events. The award winning retail display was designed by David Gauld, who previously worked for Arata Isozaki and was the project architect for the Guggenheim Museum SoHo. The display is a yarn sampling wall fixture that allows customers to reel off samples of different Lion Brand yarns. The customer can then borrow needles and/or hooks to swatch up the yarn. The fixture reflects the values and sensibilities of the new retail space: modern, helpful to the knitter and crocheter, and unique.
