Urban Mapping, Inc. (UMI) announced that its critically acclaimed Panamap has been named Best of Show for the 2009 HOW International Design Awards. In total, Urban Mapping has now won eight design awards for its unique multi-layered map.
Urban Mapping's Panamap products feature the company's patented MapAction™ technology, which provides an efficient and elegant means of viewing multi-layered information.
The maps deliver contextually-relevant information, such as street grids, subway lines and footprints of well-known landmarks and neighborhoods, in a format that enables users to view different information depending on how they hold the map.
The map's reverse side includes entertainment venues, museums, sights, shopping and restaurants.
HOW Magazine stated that Urban Mapping's "award-winning project combines the best of print and interactive design in a new tool to help people navigate through cities."
In fact, it was the interactive nature of the technology that stood out with the judges.
Shannon Carter, one of the competition's judges, believes that Panamap redefines the very concept of a map, adding, "It feels like it's always been like this, and you can't imagine a map any other way."
"It's an amazing use of design and technology."
HOW strives to serve the business, technological and creative needs of graphic-design professionals.
The magazine also sponsors four high-profile graphic design competitions annually, including the International Design Awards.
Urban Mapping will be honored as the Best of Show winner at the 2009 HOW Design Conference in Austin, Texas in June of this year.
