An Event Apart announces the addition of Dan Cederholm, author, Bulletproof Web Design, to the speaker line-up at An Event Apart Seattle and Boston.
Cederholm’s talk, Implementing Design: Bulletproof A–Z, covers 26 ways to help one's interface become more adaptable and work better in more browsers and devices.
A recognized expert in the field of standards-based web design, Dan co-founded the wine community site, Cork’d, and has worked with Google, MTV, ESPN, Fast Company, Blogger, and Odeo.
He embraces flexible, adaptable design using web standards through his client work, writing, and speaking.
Author of two best-selling books, Bulletproof Web Design and Web Standards Solutions, Dan also runs a popular blog where he writes articles and commentary on the web, technology, and life.
With rapid changes in the browser landscape, especially Firefox and Safari, Cederholm suggests it’s time to reevaluate the industry’s methodology and rethink the concept of delivering identical views in every browser.
Using “progressive enrichment,” Cederholm believes that web designers and developers can take advantage of advanced CSS which works in modern browsers while degrading “nicely” in Internet Explorer.
“I’ve historically ignored newer technologies until they are ready for the mainstream,” said Dan Cederholm, web designer and founder, SimpleBits.
“The speed of change in new browser versions has added more support for standards which haven’t even been completed yet! It’s never been a better time to experiment.”
The controversy emanates from not displaying identical design details in every browser--specifically Internet Explorer 6. Cederholm balks at the idea of sticking to visual parity, doing things the same way they have always been done, which in his opinion means the hard way.
Dan’s talk will inspire web designers to begin experimenting with CSS3 while embracing delivered content that looks different in different browsers yet maintains readability and functionality.
“Web designers and front-end developers will truly benefit from Dan’s presentation and exploration of new practices for old standards,” said Jeffrey Zeldman, co-founder of An Event Apart.
“Dan is one of the smartest, most advanced, and yet most practical designer-developers out there. I never fail to learn from his presentations, and they are as entertaining as they are enlightening.”
An Event Apart delivers two days with the greatest minds and hottest talents in web design in the present day.
