Extra’s long tradition of excellence was validated once again, when the publication received four 2009 Jose Marti Publishing awards from the National Association of Hispanic Publications (NAHP).
Extra won in the following categories:
Abel Arciniega, production manager and photographer for Extra, said he was speechless when he heard he won two photography awards.
"To win one is an honor, but to win two, with all the great competition out there, is something special," Arciniega said.
"I could not have done it without the help of my great editorial and production team. They keep me on my toes when it comes to coming up with fresh new ideas. I thank them deeply for that."
Nile Wendorf, associate publisher for EXTRA, said it was an honor to receive these prestigious awards.
"Our four awards reflect the quality of our newspaper as well as the deep bond we've built with our readers in the Chicago Latino community," Wendorf said.
"Our goal is to produce the best bilingual community newspaper that serves the growing Latino community within metro Chicago. I appreciate the hard work of our associates that made these awards possible."
Extra received the awards during the 24th annual NAHP convention in McAllen, Texas. The convention hosts the largest gathering of Hispanic print media in the U.S.
There were over 300 entries submitted in various categories from dailies, weeklies, bi-weeklies and monthlies to the NAHP. A panel of judges selected gold, silver and bronze awards for categories of ‘General Excellence,’ ‘Outstanding Sections,’ ‘Written Word,’ ‘Design,’ ‘Photos,’ ‘Cartoons and Marketing.’
