Dell Ranks No. 1 In First TBR Sustainability Index Benchmark Report
PRESS RELEASE

May 2009

Technology Business Research (TBR) has announced Dell in the No. 1 position in its inaugural Corporate Sustainability Index (CSI) Benchmark Report for 2009. The report measures the environmental initiatives of 40 companies in the computer hardware, software, professional services and network and telecommunications sectors.

Scoring 317.9 points, Dell led the second place firm (BT) by more than 52 points in the overall index ranking.

In addition to its overall top ranking, Dell also led firms in the computing sector, including IBM, HP, Sun Microsystems and Cisco. Dell scored particularly well in renewable energy use, recycling and its integration of a sustainability strategy in its business. Dell sources about 35 percent of its U.S. energy use from green power and approximately 20 percent globally, and it offers free computer recycling to consumers worldwide.

The report scored more than 100 discrete sustainability factors, including emissions, energy, renewable energy, annualized emission reductions, water use, recycling rates, public environmental commitments and more. Designed to provide sustainability data to IT vendors, customers, employees and financial markets, the CSI report will be available from TBR on June 1, 2009.

Brad Allen, Global Business Sustainability Service director, TBR said, “CSI leadership underscores a corporation’s commitment to sustainability in their business models and practices. Dell’s environmental commitments are bearing fruit, elevating Dell to the most environmentally progressive IT vendor in the world for 2008.”

Mark Newton, senior manager of environmental sustainability, Dell said, “We’ve made some great progress with regards to integrating environmental sustainability into our operations and our products, but we can–and will–do better. And while it’s great to be ranked No. 1, what really matters is the industry is aligning around a more holistic approach to defining 'green' and preserving our planet.”
