The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) and the National Trust for Historic Preservation announced the PepsiCo World Headquarters in Purchase, N.Y., as the winner of the 2009 Landmark Award.
The award recognizes a project’s design excellence, longevity and contribution to the public realm.
Designed by EDSA in 1970, the PepsiCo World Headquarters remains one of the top corporate campuses anywhere on the globe.
It features a blend of landscapes, sculptures, gardens and fountains that sets the standard for corporate campus environments and continues to enhance the quality of employees’ attitudes, lifestyles and overall performance.
A key component of the design separated the parking lot from the buildings, directing employees through the beautiful landscape on their way to their desks.
The awards jury said, “It marks one of the first times a great landscape had to deal with cars, and the relationship is extraordinary...it’s a masterpiece.”
The Landmark Award recognizes a distinguished landscape architecture project completed between 15 and 50 years ago that retains its original design integrity and contributes significantly to the public realm of the community in which it is located.
Previous recipients include the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, Golden Gate National Recreation Area near San Francisco, Harvard University’s Tanner Fountain and Charleston Waterfront Park.
