Snite Museum Presents “Thin”
EXHIBITION ANNOUNCEMENT

University Of Notre Dame
America

02 August - 12 October 2009

The Snite Museum of Art is opening the exhibition “Thin, Photographs by Lauren Greenfield.”

“Thin” is a traveling exhibition of fifty-three color photographs curated by the artist and Trudy Wilner Stack, and organized by The Women's Museum: An Institute for the Future, Dallas, Texas and Greenfield/Evers, LLC. It focuses on the complex, appearance-based eating disorders of young women receiving treatment for life-threatening weight-loss level at a Florida residential facility.

The exhibit brings the subject of eating disorders to the surface where we, as a culture, can begin to deal with this thought-provoking subject in our homes and schools. The exhibition weaves together large-scale portraits and documentary photographs; art and journals; interviews; video and narrative texts; educational facts and resources, to bring museum audiences a clear, compelling and humanely-drawn look at a pervasive cultural problem.

Visitors will address this epidemic illness that has burdened young women to the point of death. National and Inner Circle Sponsors share in the honor and prestige associated with this exhibit as well as the award-winning documentary film and book, Thin. Greenfield's first touring exhibition, Girl Culture, which also addressed body image and identity issues of girls and women and was also exhibited at the Snite Museum, has been seen by over 650,000600,000 people across the globe since its release in 2002.

With “Thin,” Lauren Greenfield offers a portrayal of profound insight and understanding to reveal the hidden nature of an ironic and deadly danger of privileged society.
