Benham's Galery, Off the Wall: The Dimensions of Evan Blackwell
Wednesday, May 31 - Saturday, July 22, 2006
First Thursday Artwalk: June 1st, 6-8pm
Artist Reception: Saturday, June 3rd, 5:3o-8:3opm

Evan Blackwell, originally from the east coast, currently resides in Seattle, Washington. In 1999, Evan received his B.F.A. in Ceramics from Alfred University in Alfred, New York. He has worked as a Teaching Assistant at the Haystack Mountain School of Craft and is currently an Instructor of Ceramics at Pottery Northwest in Seattle.

His early ceramic sculptures and installations explore the medium for its connection to landscape by creating visual metaphors that represent our relationship and perception of nature. A love for the expressiveness of materials, the power of multiples and the dynamism of natureî inspire his work.

Evan's material obsessions have expanded, for his solo exhibition at Gallery 1216, "Off the Wall." He has created sculptures out of disposable, mass-produced items; these familiar objects transcend their intended use and become precious commentary on what our culture values, disregards and discards. Hangers woven together and thousands of plastic straws fused by heat create dialogue about our modern-day experience.

The Pacific Northwest has recognized Evan Blackwell's talents since he has moved here. In 2003 he was chosen for the Pilchuck Glass School Emerging Artist-in-Residence (EAiR) Program. Pilchuck Glass School affords six local, national and international artists a residency to explore and expand the possibilities of glass in their art. The result was an exhibition at Priceless Works Gallery in Fremont, WA.

In 2005, he was one of five finalists chosen for the Seattle Art Museum's Betty Bowen Memorial Award. He received one of the two PONCHO Special Recognition Awards. Evan and the other four artists were selected from among 500 applicants from Washington, Oregon, and Idaho.

This year Evan was one of four students accepted to the University of Washingtonís MFA program in Ceramics where he will be studying with Doug Jeck, Akio Takamori and Jamie Walker.

Three of our area's top arts organizations agree that Evan Blackwell is an artist to watch and support. His exhibition at Gallery 1216 will be his last solo exhibition before he enters the MFA program at the UW this fall. Don't miss the opening this 1st Thursday, June 1st 6-8pm or his artists reception Saturday, June 3rd from 5:30-8:30pm.
