According to the Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council (SBE Council), an advocacy and research organization dedicated to small business issues, the Microsoft and Yahoo! partnership announced on July 29 will bring much-needed competition to the marketplace. Yahoo! searches will exclusively use Microsoft's new search tool, Bing.
This deal is a good one for small business, according to SBE Council. A sizeable competitor in the Google-dominated search advertising sector will help to lower prices and make search-based promotions more affordable for businesses. Search advertising is still out-of-reach for many small businesses, and robust competition in this area will help to reduce costs, increase choice and spur greater innovation in this space.
Raymond J. Keating, chief economist for SBE Council said, "The Microsoft/Yahoo! deal is another example of businesses seeking ways through the private marketplace to better serve consumers, including small businesses that increasingly rely on and benefit from advancements in online search technologies and competition. For good measure, if consumers find value in what the Microsoft/Yahoo! team bring to the market, then the resulting growth will expand opportunities for entrepreneurs and small firms that work with and serve Microsoft and Yahoo!. This deal holds the potential for some exciting developments and opportunities in the online arena."
