The international weekly retains the layout and typography of The New York Times and includes news coverage, features, commentary, color photos and graphics about the United States , world affairs, business, culture and social trends. It is prepared in New York by a team of editors and designers from The New York Times News Service .

Founded in 1991, El Observador is distributed daily throughout Uruguay. The publication includes sections on national and international news, opinion, economy, culture and sports, and carries supplements that cover business, university news and agriculture.
In addition to the newspaper, El Observador publishes various magazines and annual yearbooks.
