After receiving over 200 captivating entries, a panel of judges awarded Cansu Akarsu, a design student In Istanbul, Turkey, with the grand prize of $1,000, a set of 500 colored pencils and a paid trip to Japan to present her design at 100% Design Tokyo.
The Case Design Competition is the second in a series of Social Designer competitions devoted to 500 Colored Pencils – a colorful and inspirational subscription-based set of 500 different colored pencils created by Felissimo. Interested designers were asked to submit their ideas for a functional and innovative case design for the complete 500 Colored Pencils set – whether for storage, display, transportation, etc.
After receiving an overwhelming response and reviewing hundreds of submissions, a panel of judges from the Felissimo headquarters in Kobe, Japan selected Cansu Akarsu, an industrial design student from Istanbul, Turkey, as the overall winner. Her “End To End” case design features a series of plastic case couples and connector balls that link the pencils together, enabling them to move freely while keeping them attached.
According to Akarsu, “The irregular shapes created when scribbling on a paper mainly inspired my design. The case holder connects pencils together end to end, in a folding line, which is easy to use and easy to pack.”
As the winner of the competition, Akarsu will receive what all design students dream of: A chance to attend 100% Design Tokyo on October 30th, 2009 to present her design to her peers and the public.
“Culture and technology are what inspires a designer most; and Japan has them all,” says Akarsu, “It will not be an ordinary trip since I will be able to meet designers and see my own design presented among them.”
Akarsu will also receive a check for $1,000 and a set of 500 Colored Pencils.
