"If there is an American dream, this is it for me," Francisco Costa shared at the Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards Monday night when he accepted the trophy for Womenswear Designer of the Year from Scarlett Johansson.

The Calvin Klein designer edged out Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough of Proenza Schouler and no-show Marc Jacobs to clinch the CFDA's top award less than three years after he became head designer for the illustrious house.

"To me, it's an American dream already," Costa told ELLE.

"The recognition is there.

The Calvin Klein legend is phenomenal and I have to take it forward my way.

I have to do my own thing with respect to the past."
