The Calvin Klein designer edged out Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough of Proenza Schouler and no-show Marc Jacobs to clinch the CFDA's top award less than three years after he became head designer for the illustrious house.
"To me, it's an American dream already," Costa told ELLE.
"The recognition is there.
The Calvin Klein legend is phenomenal and I have to take it forward my way.
I have to do my own thing with respect to the past."
