Art Miami Breaks New Ground For Midtown Base
Continuing to build on its solid past and looking to ‘cement’ its future, Art Miami, the City’s longest-running contemporary art fair, has begun laying the foundation for its expansive art pavilion in Midtown Miami. Concrete slabs were poured last month, serving as the base of Art Miami’s iconic 80,000sqft, state-of-the-art pavilion, which will house eighty international galleries exhibiting the best modern and contemporary paintings, drawings, sculpture, photography and prints from Europe, Asia, Latin America, India, the Middle East and the United States when the Fair takes place in December. Dubbed ‘the anchor art fair’ of the City, Art Miami has essentially anchored itself within the burgeoning Midtown neighborhood…and Miami as a whole.

“Pouring the slabs strengthens our infrastructure and signifies our long-term commitment to Miami and Midtown,” said Art Miami Show Director and co-owner Nick Korniloff.

“The Fair has seen considerable growth since its inception, and the slabs will enable the fair to accommodate the desire of participating galleries to exhibit heavy objects and sculpture this year and in the future. This improvement to the facility is phase one of a scheduled three-phase property enhancement plan for Art Miami in Midtown. We look forward to a future filled with an even greater growth.”

This year’s edition of Art Miami marks the Fair’s 20th anniversary. Coupled with its notable successes on the international art front, the milestone positions the Fair as one of the most important venues for modern and contemporary art in the United States. Having weathered and survived two economic downturns, the pouring of concrete has added significance for the Fair - in effect, solidifying its history and future.

Art Miami 2009 will feature a wide range of special exhibitions, including a large outdoor sculpture by world renowned artist Tony Cragg, a series of museum-quality video installations curated by Asher Remy Toledo and Julia Draganovic, and select offerings from private and public collections, all helping make Art Miami a prime destination for art collectors, curators, museum professionals and art enthusiasts. Art Miami additionally distinguishes itself from other Miami art fairs by presenting decorative arts, African tribal art, Pre-Colombian art, Japanese bamboo art, textiles and kiln formed glass.
