Ogilvy was nominated by members of the award committee, largely in recognition of its commitment to diversity, a value the agency shares with the MCC.
In accepting the award, John said, “David Ogilvy was an early and fervent advocate of diversity in the workplace. As Chairman of the United Negro College Fund in 1968, he set the agenda for the agency’s pursuit of inclusion in the workplace … a pursuit we continue today, reflected in our polices in recruitment, training, professional development, and procurement.”
The award was presented by Jill Kaplan, Publisher, Crain’s New York Business. It was sponsored by FedEx, to whom John apologized for Ogilvy’s recent appointment as the global agency of record for UPS.
John concluded by commenting that, “Over 60 years ago, the reality of Ogilvy & Mather today was simply the dream of one man, an ambitious Scotsman who wanted to transform the advertising business in America. Members of the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce all know that dreaming big is what New York is all about.”
Now in its 89th year, the MCC represents the voice of 100,000 small and mid-size businesses in Manhattan. It supports its members and the business community at large through a variety of monthly educational events, marketing opportunities and networking events. For many years, the MCC has been honoring businesses in a number of categories that have made a significant contribution to the economy and life of NYC.
