The winners were announced at Mark’s Park, Bondi as Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi drew to a close for another year, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors.
Price is recognized as one of the finest kinetic sculptors in the Southern Hemisphere, and his work Morpheus has drawn much attention during the 18 day exhibition. Showing its international appeal, Morpheus was also the winner of the Kids’ Choice Award at the inaugural "Sculpture by the Sea", Aarhus – Denmark held in June earlier this year under the Patronage of Their Royal Highnesses Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark .
“It’s a great pleasure to be back in "Sculpture by the Sea" after 4 years away, and to be welcomed back with the Peoples Choice Award is fantastic,” said Phil Price.
Sydney artist Jane Gillings won the NAB Kid’s Choice Award of $3,000 for her sculpture, Dream Home. A firm favorite from the start, Dream Home was constantly played with by children throughout the exhibition who were attracted by the playful small house covered in children’s toys made as a response to the consumerism and consumption in our society which starts from a very young age.
“What I love about the piece is that it brings out the kid in everyone and I probably had more fun making it, than the thousands of kids had playing in the piece during the exhibit. Winning this prize is a great reward for a lot of hard work,” said artist Jane Gillings.
Other prizes announced were:
Belinda Villani from Sydney won the Waverley Council Parks Staff prize for her sculpture "Tribute to a Workhorse", which was presented by the Mayor of Waverley Councillor Sally Betts.
"Sculpture by the Sea", Bondi artist, Argentina based, Alejandro Propato won the Sculpture by the Sea Staff Prize for arte de las playas and was presented with the prize by Leader of the Federal Opposition and local Member for Parliament, Malcolm Turnbull.
This year was the thirteenth annual "Sculpture by the Sea" held along Sydney ’s spectacular Bondi to Tamarama coastal walk. "Sculpture by the Sea", Bondi is the largest annual sculpture exhibition in the world and this year featured 114 sculptures by artists from Australia, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, England, Germany, Iran, Japan, New Zealand and the USA.
Its sister exhibition, "Sculpture by the Sea", Cottesloe, will return to Cottesloe Beach in Perth from 4 – 23 March, 2010.
