The awards were presented by Grupo Salinas Founder and Chairman Ricardo B. Salinas, together with Mexico City Mayor Marcelo Ebrard, State of Mexico Governor Enrique Pena Nieto, Caminos de la Libertad Director Sergio Sarmiento and Hans Matern, Commercial Attache of the German Embassy.
"We can't talk about freedom if we aren't prepared to exercise it," said Salinas.
"We can't speak of liberty if we don't have the responsibility to accept the consequences of our actions."
Caminos de la Libertad para Jovenes is an invitation for youth ages 15 to 25 to express through music, photography, fine arts, video and writing what freedom means and what walls have to be torn down to achieve it. Prizes were 50,000 pesos for first place, 30,000 pesos for second place and 15,000 pesos for third place.
The first-place winners were: video, Mariano Renteria Garnica; music, Ernesto Avila Lopez; written expression, Rodrigo Alberto Hernandez; PintArte en Converse, Daniela Pena Funes; fine art, Graciel Arantza Vargas; and photography, Sara Wanless.
