Amazon, Barnes & Noble Lower eReader Prices
Amazon and Barnes & Noble have on 21 June announced lower prices for its Kindle and Noob eReaders, respectively, to combat the threat posed by Apple’s iPad tablet.

The Kindle will now sell for US$189, down from US$259, while the Nook 3G goes for US$199. Barnes & Noble have also introduced the Nook Wi-Fi for US$149. Comparatively, the iPad starts at US$499.

Despite criticisms levelled at it, the iPad has sold more than 2 million units in the two months it has been on the market.

Barnes & Noble has faced sales declines at its physical bookstores - 5.5% during the end of 2009 - and is hoping to move into the nascent e-book market.

The Nook was released last October, and the Kindle has been in the market for three years.

According to analysts, Apple will command a 33% share of the e-book market in 2015 while Amazon’s share will drop by almost half. Barnes & Noble is expected to hit a 15% share by 2015, up from its 5% number in 2010, Reuters reports.

The e-book market is expected to reach US$3.2 billion by 2015, or 12.8% of total book sales, according to the report.
