Apple Collecting, Sharing iPhone Users' Locations
In an updated version of its privacy policy released 21 June, Apple is now collecting the “precise”, “real-time geographic location” of its users’ iPhones, iPads and computers to share with “partners and licensees”.

Apple, however, is careful in assuring its users that the data is “collected anonymously in the form that does not personally identify you”.

Users are prompted to agree to the new terms and conditions whenever they attempt to download apps or media from the iTunes store, meaning unless users agree, they cannot shop from the store.

The company said that it uses the information to “improve our services, content, and advertising”, but apart from its proprietary MobileMe feature, did not specify which partners or licensees the geo-data will be shared with.

An update on the LA Times blog mentioned that while Apple has added a ‘Location Services’ page under a settings menu, there is still “nothing to indicate that these settings prevent Apple itself from gathering and storing location data”.

Google’s Android system, the iPhone’s major competitor, has for some time been collecting geo-data from users.

While ‘location awareness’ is the watchword in social media and technology as of late, privacy issues appear to be a huge concern. Facebook have also recently announced a location-aware service for its 500 million users.

Here is the passage in Apple’s privacy policy:

"To provide location-based services on Apple products, Apple and our partners and licensees may collect, use, and share precise location data, including the real-time geographic location of your Apple computer or device. This location data is collected anonymously in a form that does not personally identify you and is used by Apple and our partners and licensees to provide and improve location-based products and services. For example, we may share geographic location with application providers when you opt in to their location services.

Some location-based services offered by Apple, such as the MobileMe “Find My iPhone” feature, require your personal information for the feature to work."
