World Cup Game Breaks Twitter Record
Twitter announced 25 June that its record for Tweets-per-second (TPS) was broken during the World Cup game between Japan and Denmark.

The record now stands at a staggering 3,283 TPS, slightly ahead of the previous 3,085 record. The previous record was also set during a sporting event, an NBA championship game.

“The second week of the World Cup continued to see consistent spikes in TPS after goals that are remarkable increases over our average of 750 TPS,” wrote Twitter’s Kevin Weil in a blog post.

Despite a study finding that website activity might drop during the football tournament, Twitter has proven that social media remains a ubiquitous part of people’s lives.
