Move over wireless, the new computer mouse will be completely invisible. Researchers at the MIT Media Lab have come up with a way to remove the physical mouse from the tabletop, but still allow users to click and scroll the same way they would a regular mouse.
‘Mouseless’ uses infrared technology and cameras to track hand movements, so all users have to do is cup their hands and ‘pretend’ they’re using a real mouse. So tapping your index finger on thin air will read as a mouse click.
Project lead Pranav Mistry says multitouch gestures such as zooming are all possible with this technology, and the use of multiple laser beams would “allow for recognition of a wider range of free hand motions, enabling novel gestures that the hardware mouse cannot support”.
And the entire system costs only US$20 to build, according to Mistry. Looks like the Minority Report future might very well be upon us.
