Creator of American Splendor and a legend of comic books, Harvey Pekar, was found dead on 12 July in his Cleveland, Ohio home. He was 70.
No cause of death was given, although Pekar was known to be suffering from prostate cancer, high blood pressure, and other illnesses.
Pekar was known for his skill in crafting existential themes out of the mundane, which brought his work closer to another comic book doyen, Will Eisner.
He collaborated with Robert Crumb for the first American Splendor issue which debuted in 1976.
The acclaimed comic book author was portrayed by Paul Giamatti in the 2003 film American Splendor, which documented the artist’s early career, rise to fame and battle with prostate cancer.
