Microsoft, NASA Bring Mars to Computer Screens

For space cadets, UFO-enthusiasts and science geeks everywhere, NASA and Microsoft Research have teamed up to bring you the “most complete high-resolution coverage of Mars available”, Microsoft said in a statement.

As part of its WorldWide Telescope (WWT) app, a fully interactive and true-color map of Mars has been made available to the public on 12 July.

The map utilizes more than 13,000 images captured by NASA spacecrafts, and was stitched together by NASA’s Intelligent Robotics Group.

WWT will also feature 3D renderings of the red planet and exclusive interactive video tours with NASA scientists, enabling a “whole new audience to experience the thrill of space”, said NASA’s chief technology officer for IT Chris Kemp.
