Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg made the announcement on 22 July on the social network’s blog, calling it an “exciting milestone for the Facebook community”.
In the blog post, he thanked users for Facebook’s success and for “creating a worldwide movement”.
But according to Zuckerberg, the number “isn’t what really matters”—it’s the stories that count for more. To tie in with this, Facebook has launched a new application, Facebook Stories.
Facebook Stories will allow users to “share their own story and read hundreds of others” about the impact the social network has had on their lives. And with half a billion users in the bank, expect a whole lot of stories.
Next stop, real-world domination.
