They aren’t exactly the “new products” promised by Apple CEO Steve Jobs two weeks ago, but the iMac and Mac Pro line of desktops have undergone a refresh.
Announced 27 July, the updates are pretty much hardware boosts—better chips and graphics—but they’re sure to whet any Apple fanboy’s appetite. The high-end Mac Pro models, for example, will come with quad-core and 6-core Intel Xeon processors.
The desktops will now also ship with the Magic Mouse, and customers will have the option to order the Magic Trackpad, basically the multi-touch trackpad popularized by the MacBook line of notebooks.
The iMac starts at US$1,199 for the 21.5-inch model and is available immediately while the Mac Pro starts at US$2,499 and will hit the shelves in August.
These updates come just as Apple announced its most successful quarter, selling more than a million desktop Macs. Even after the ‘Antennagate’ scandal, it seems little can be done to stop the Apple steamroller from pushing on.
