Just after slashing prices on their Kindle range of e-readers, Amazon has on 28 July introduced a newest device to the family.
The Kindle Wi-Fi is, at US$139, the cheapest of the lot but will be wireless-only, without the 3G capabilities the other models have. The new model is expected to have mass appeal, according to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.
“At these price points, we’re starting to accumulate evidence that this is a mass product,” he told Reuters. “This is a very broad audience.”
Bezos has also said in a statement that he hopes people are going to buy “multiple units for the home and family”.
Amazon also revealed updates to the regular Kindles, which now sport a 21% smaller body and 15% lighter weight. According to Bezos, the Kindle has seen a “triple” in sales growth after Amazon lowered its price about a month ago.
All the new Kindles, including the wireless-only unit, will start shipping beginning 27 August. The Kindle Wi-Fi is available for pre-order here and the updated Kindle can be pre-ordered here.
Besides Amazon’s strong front in the e-reader market, competitors Sony and Barnes & Noble have also dropped their prices in anticipation of the strong competition from Apple’s iPad.
