In Soviet Russia, YouTube Bans You

But it's the other way round in modern day Russia.

A Russian court has ordered all local ISPs to block access to YouTube over racist and extremist views. The ban was sparked after the video sharing website hosted “Russia for Russians”, part of a campaign used by far right groups in the country.

The video is deemed to contain extremist elements, and "Russian for Russians" is itself a derogatory slogan usually hurled against the multi-ethnic Russian society.

Besides YouTube, three other websites were banned under similar grounds: the Internet Archive, Lib.rus.ec, Thelib.ru and Zhurnal.ru.

Russia has now joined a long list of countries that have blocked YouTube at one point—Pakistan, Thailand and Saudi Arabia are just a few of these nations.

However, at least one ISP—Rosnet—is appealing the ruling, calling it “absurd”.

“These decisions should not be taken by a court,” Rosnet owner Aleksandr Ermakov said in an interview. “All of mankind is using this website. And providers like ours do not violate Russian law. But we are still being forced to close the website so that our users can not log on and watch the videos.”
